Italian Renaissance and Neoclassic

Image
Furniture from the Italian Renaissance is known for its traditional patterns and orderly designs. It was made from expensive materials like walnut and wood. Craftsmen used complicated methods of joining and inlaying, and they used polychrome finishes and gold to make the pieces look better. The style included furniture like mirrors and armoires, as well as chairs and settees with lots of different parts. Master artists and craftsmen helped shape the style, and workshops and groups kept standards high and came up with new ways to do things. Styles were different in different parts of Italy because of the materials and society there. Furniture was a sign of wealth and style, and it had an effect on both everyday life and the way homes were designed. Later styles and designs were influenced by Italian Renaissance furniture. Its craftsmanship and important role in furniture history are still celebrated through preservation efforts and modern versions.        ...

The Americas

Image
This chapter talks about how Native Americans used to make furniture. The picture shows how simple, useful shapes like stools, chairs, and mats can be made from things like wood and animal hides. Colonial and regional styles that came after in North and South America were influenced by the work of local artists. During their time as colonists, the English, French, Spanish, and Dutch changed the forms of furniture in North America. It talks about boxes, chairs, and tables, which are all important pieces of furniture. For example, furniture from New England is easier than the furniture from the South, which shows that things are different depending on where somebody lives. The English, French, Spanish, and Dutch colonists all had a big impact on the style of furniture in North America during that time. Desks, chairs, and chests are some important pieces of furniture. There are different styles in different parts of the country. For example, designs in the South are more detailed than tho...

Gothic

Image
The Gothic age took place in the Middle Ages between the 12th century and the 16th century. I was changed a lot by the power and rule of the Catholic church. People in France, England, and Italy liked the Gothic style because of the way it was built vertically, how detailed the paintings were, and how it used holy symbols. This chapter talks about how these features were used all over Europe. At this time, new ideas in building, especially in cathedrals, had a big effect on how furniture was made. Everyday furniture took on a sense of majesty and dedication.                                             Gothic Style Building                              House with Gothic Features Many Gothic buildings had pointed arches, ribbed domes, and flying buttresses that...

Romanesque and Islamic

Image
Romanesque furniture was heavily affected by the architecture of the time. It had solid, bulky shapes that looked like the buildings' thick walls and rounded arches. The main material was wood, which was often strengthened with iron parts to make it last longer. Storage pieces like chests, armoires, and cupboards were important types of furniture for both monasteries and homes. Simple benches, stools, and sometimes thrones for the rich were used as seats. Trestle tables were useful and easy to move around. There wasn't much decoration, just religious and geometric designs. Durability was a big part of craftsmanship, and joint methods like mortise and tenon were often used.                                Charlemagne's Throne                                 Present day Buckingham Palace Throne    ...
