 Classical Civilizations

Ancient Greece and Rome are examples of classical civilizations that had a great impact on the way furniture was made. They influenced the appearance and the function of furniture through their buildings, art, and culture, which set a lasting effect.

Ancient Greeks displayed in their furniture how important it was to create it proportionally and functionally, while also making it look beautiful. Some common materials that Greeks used in their furniture were marble, metal, and wood. Their furniture was decorated with geometric designs and mythological scenes and some examples of this could be the klismos chair and the kline couch. Their furniture was not only attractive but practical.

Roman furniture was greatly influenced by Greek styles, but Roman furniture was much more luxurious and useful compared to Greek furniture. The Romans liked incorporating materials like bronze, wood, and marble, and they made expensive furniture. Some examples of this are the cathdra and sella. Both had elaborate inlays and they displayed how wealthy and powerful the Romans were.

Classical furniture was often made with materials like ivory and tortoiseshell, and they were decorated with several different complicated methods like inlay and veneering. They added significance to their art by decorating it, like using acanthus leaves, mythological characters, and animal shapes, and this made it more appealing.

Vitruvius believed that building was based on three principles, function, stability, and beauty. He influenced other architects to also integrate these principles. He also thought it was very important to include architectural features like columns, arches, and roofs. He used them to create symmetry and balance in both public and private buildings.
